Nayan is by nature an incredibly caring and giving person. He’s always had a heart for people, been a philanthropist, an optimist, and an altruistic person. He’s loving and attentive to those close to him and – while he is rather quiet at first – very friendly to those he’s getting to know. That said, years of medical work in the most horrific parts of the world has left him cynical as to the good of human kind and it’s his opinion that when given the chance humans are more likely to be monsters than men. He has a very clear sense of right and wrong and believes very much and people are responsible for their own actions and are to be held accountable for them. Nayan will never stand by and let bad things happen, even if there isn’t really much he can do to stop it.

LOOKS LIKE

Nayan is by no means a large man. Standing at 5 foot 10 inches, weighing in at 153 pounds he’s got a slenderer build than most and has been called ‘pretty’ by teasing peers. He’s in good shape in the sense his diet over the years has never been the American surplus and hard labor’s been a staple of his life since he left New York. He’s a bit scruffy if he lets himself be. He tends to develop five o’clock shadow at noon and his dark curls get away from him. Nayan favors jeans, button-down T-shirt combos and work boots when out of his professional work attire. People tell him he looks more ‘respectable’ and ‘older’ when he dresses up though.

HISTORY

Nayan was a born a second generation Indian American in New York, the son of a university mathematician and the owner of a small pharmaceutical company. He was given in the best in education and life, grew up spoiled, never wanting for anything, and very aware of this fact. At a very young age he determined – somewhat at the behest of his highly expectant parents – to make something of himself. He did this and at age 27 when he earned his PhD and became one of the leading researchers in the field of forensic anthropology.

His field research took him to third world countries all over and globe and it was during his second tour through Africa, year 2002 that he met a young French doctor working in an MSF field hospital in Tanzania. He was there to get data on the prevalence of the HIV virus in order to garner interest for a grant back in the States and this pissed off her French humanitarian sensibilities. The young woman basically called him a laboratory squint physician and told him to go back to the anti-bacterial scrubbed surfaces of his natural habitat in America. While this was sound advice, Nayan decided to full time with the MSF and work with Amnesty International.

He also married the sarcastic French doctor, Sacha Badeau, two years later. Between the two of them, they faced down just every horror the world could vomit up: the worse of humanity’s black mechanizations. Nayan worked with Amnesty International on various human rights campaigns across the world. His academic research was constantly derailed by MSF requests for his help in body identification and testimony in human rights trials. He became a harder person, more cynical, but never gave up his conviction in what he was doing was right.

It was during his work in the Kashmir Conflict, however, that things finally became too much. While stationed in a medical outpost for Hindu Kashmiri refugees near Rajauri Nayan had a run in with a group of belligerent Indian Armed Guard soldiers. They kept insisting that several of the Kashimiri girls in the clinic were suspects in a crime and needed to come with them. Nayan lied and told them the girls had already left. The soldiers didn’t believe him. They ransacked the clinic. By the time authorities arrived every Kashmiri refugee had been– as it was later revealed – tortured to death in front of him. Nayan left the MSF and has been living quietly in New York for a few months until, on a whim, Sacha entered him in contest for a coveted place on the Nausicaä.

He won. Sacha and he were going to go together but the day before they were set to leave, Sacha was called back to the field. She told him to take the time to get himself together and promised to meet him in Bermuda.

SPECIAL ABILITIES/RANDOM FACTS

Speaks rough French, fluent Tamil Indian and English (though he has an accent). He plays a pretty mean bass guitar, can juggle up to five items, is a sci-fi geek, and knows how to handle a firearm. He can’t cook to save his life. He hates, absolutely hates the show Bones. Seriously. Don't even talk about it.

STRENGTHS

Genuine Empathy: He’s a really nice guy. Really. He cares about and loves being around others. He’s very good at comforting people and helping others through even the worst of things. Because of his honest and patient nature, he’s really good at talking people down and has lots of experience negotiating terms of agreement.

Smart: He’s gifted with uncommon amounts of common sense in addition to hard won book smarts.

Brave: A history of seeing terrible things has cultivated a needed bravery in Nayan. He doesn’t easily intimidate and he knows when to stand up and when to back down – both of which take bravery of a particular kind.

WEAKNESSES

Rescuer: Nayan can’t ever sit back and watch while bad things happen to others. He’ll rush in to save someone regardless of the consequences to himself.

Trauma: Bad things happened in Kashmir, but then again bad things have happened all over the world and for a majority of his career in forensic anthropology Nayan has had a front row seat to hell. He’s psychologically messed up. Has nightmares, sudden flash backs, and is constantly haunted by the memory of the girls who died in front of him.

Not a Fighter: He’s really not. At all. He’d lose your average bar fight; which isn’t to say he’s not strong, just that he’s unaccustomed to hitting others and is not well acquainted with being hit. He does, however, have a remarkably high pain tolerance.

Asthmatic: Nayan can’t breathe when he panics. By panic I mean full on freak out, walls are closing in, Freddy is in the fucking room with a chainsaw, etc.
